Q: Are Rock Steady Boxing coaches certified through an accredited exercise program?
A: The Rock Steady Boxing program has met the rigorous requirements of the Parkinson’s Foundation Exercise Competency Framework. The RSB comprehensive coach training program provides and assesses knowledge and skill acquisition. The training program allows participants to become certified exercise professionals. Coaches are then re-assessed on an on-going basis to maintain certification. This program is one of only three such programs accredited by the Parkinson's Foundation.
Q: So how do I join Rock Steady Boxing of Michiana?
A: Our program is exclusively for folks who have been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. No doctor referral is required. The steps to membership are: 1. Call us for an appointment to observe a class - ideally with your spouse or partner. 2. Complete a written application. 3. Participate in a personal assessment. During this appointment, you and your spouse/partner will review your written application with a coach, discuss your disease progression, and have your questions answered. 4. Finally, we need to receive a medical release from your family physician. Membership is on a month-to-month basis.
Q: How often are classes held, and how long do they last?
A: Each gym offers 3 classes per week - each class lasts for 90 minutes. All our sessions are group sessions, allowing you to benefit from working out with other Parkinson's fighters.
Q: How do I check in to class?
A; Simply walk into the gym and your attendance will be recorded. If you arrive before class time, you will want to mingle and chat with other fighters or loosen up. Once class time starts, everyone will take a position in the circle and start together.
Q: What do I wear to class?
A: Wear comfortable, breathable clothes that allow you to move freely. Most of our fighters wear sweatpants or shorts and t-shirts. Gym shoes are preferred. Street shoes are not permitted on the gym floors.
Q: What equipment should I buy?
A: For hygienic reasons, we recommend that you purchase your own boxing gloves and wraps for class. For your convenience, we do sell gloves and wraps. After your application process and assessment are complete, we can fit you with proper fitting gloves and wraps.
Q: What do I take to class?
A: In addition to your gloves and wraps, we stress the importance of staying properly hydrated, so make sure to bring plenty of drinking water. (Water bottles with straws are easier to use with boxing gloves on). And as street shoes are not permitted on gym floors, you will want to bring your gym shoes.
Q: What if I can't keep up?
A: It is important that at any time, if you feel you cannot keep up or you become frustrated at not being able to perform at the level of others around you, that you communicate that to your coaches. They can modify the routine for you, or suggest alternate training methods to help you focus on specific symptoms or challenges. There is no judgment zone here. Do what you can. You may be surprised at what you can do.
Q: How often should I come to class?
A: We encourage our fighters to attend as many as 3 classes each week in order to see optimum results. Our members attend either the South Bend or Elkhart classes, but not both.
Q: Are visitors allowed to attend class sessions?
A: Members are encouraged (and in some cases required) to have a spouse or friend attend class with them as their "cornerperson". Your cornerperson can assist you with the exercises and give encouragement. Everyone on the exercise floor must be at least 18 and have a signed liability waiver on file.
Q: How do I pay for classes?
A: Monthly membership fees can be paid by check or credit card. We do prefer to receive payment by electronic funds transfer from your bank or credit/debit card. You will receive a membership agreement at your personal assessment appointment, when you can select your method of payment.
Q: Does insurance or Social Security cover the membership fee?
A: Our cost is a membership fee, not considered a form of medical treatment by insurance companies. As such, we know of no insurance company that covers this as physical treatment. Some companies offer some reimbursement for "fitness" programs. Check with your agent.
